Mental Health First Aid England Training

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training program aimed at equipping all participants with the knowledge to recognise, understand, and assist someone facing a mental health challenge.

MHFA does not aim to train individuals as therapists. Instead, it focuses on teaching effective listening, reassurance, and response strategies, especially in crisis situations, potentially preventing crises altogether.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, MHFAiders® will be equipped to:

  • Identify individuals experiencing mental health challenges and provide initial support and early intervention.
  • Assist individuals in accessing professional help and additional support resources.
  • Practice active listening and empathy.
  • Engage in discussions about mental health, addressing language and stigma.
  • Explore the MHFAider® role thoroughly, including boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Implement self-care techniques.
  • Utilise the MHFAider Support App®
  • Access dedicated support services such as Shout and ongoing learning opportunities with MHFA England.

Course Format:

The course is available online or in-person, structured across four flexible sessions, each lasting a maximum of 3 hours and 45 minutes. Sessions can be scheduled within a two-week period. Training is conducted by an MHFA England Instructor Member over four live sessions, totaling 14 hours of content.

Learning methods include instructor-led training, group discussions, and individual/group activities. Each session builds upon previous ones, empowering learners to develop confidence in implementing a Mental Health First Aid action plan.

To ensure a supportive environment, course sizes are limited to between 8-16 participants.

Course Benefits:

Participants receive:

  • A hard copy workbook to aid learning during the course.
  • A digital manual for reference post-completion.
  • A wallet-sized reference card outlining the Mental Health First Aid action plan.
  • A digital MHFAider® certificate.
  • Access to the MHFAider Support App® for three years.
  • Opportunities for ongoing learning, access to resources, and exclusive events.
  • Inclusion in the largest MHFAider® community in England.

MHFAider® Qualification:

Upon finishing the Mental Health First Aid course, participants can opt to pursue the internationally recognized MHFAider® qualification, the RSPH Level 3 Award in Mental Health First Aid, to further test their knowledge and enhance confidence in their role.
